Erling Haaland scores hat-trick for Man City in a tale of Chelsea mistakes and clinical finishing

Chosen by us to get you up to speed at a glance
The referee plays one minute of added time before bringing proceedings to a close here at the Ohio Stadium.
It was a tale of Chelsea mistakes and Erling Haaland’s clinical finishing. Two Chelsea errors gifted the Norweigan two goals in the opening five minutes of the match.
Maresca’s men had a lot of the ball but it was the same story in the second half as his side gave the ball away twice to concede two goals in as many minutes early on.
Oscar Bobb smartly finished City’s third before Haaland earned yet another match-ball.
Two really well-taken goals from Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke were consolations for Chelsea but didn’t threaten City’s lead.
Sterling – against his old side – had the pick of the bunch with a superb left-footed volley that he guided with his instep into the top left corner.
Maresca knows there will be mistakes as his side learn his philosophy but with the season opener against City just two weeks away, the amount of errors may yet concern him.
As for City they have most of their big-hitters still to return and with Haaland firing as usual you feel they will be confident heading into the Community Shield next Saturday.
Man City 4 Chelsea 2: Uguchukwu wins the ball back with a great tackle before playing a perfectly weighted ball for Madueke. The winger bears down on goal before slotting it past Carson into the bottom left corner. A swift and clinically-finished move.
Kalvin Phillips makes way for Doyle while O’Reilly and Gvardiol are also withdrawn with Guardiola giving more youth an opportunity here in the final minutes.
Rico Lewis the biggest name left on the field for City here.
The substitutions have taken the sting out of things in the closing stages here.
Chelsea will be disappointed with the sloppy goals given away here this evening but there are definitely signs of encouragement for Maresca who will hope things will click sooner rather than later with the playing out.
It is however looking like a second thrashing of pre-season so far with Real Madrid and Inter on the way.
After a flurry of chances the game enters a slight lull. Gusto plays a one-two with James and lets fly ambitiously from 30-odd yards on his weak foot. It doesn’t trouble Ortega.
The Man City keeper then makes way for Scott Carson – a nice moment for the veteran. Hat-trick hero Haaland and Kovacic are also withdrawn for Jacob Wright and Justin Oboavwoduo.
James is off for Fofana for Chelsea.
Lots of gaps opening up here with City threatening a fifth. James does well to get a foot in on Ndala as he entered the area. A lovely lofted ball from Sterling finds Guiu over the top but Ortega does enough for the Spaniard to lose control and it’s behind for a goal-kick.
Fatah has a glorious chance to make it five but has an air shot at the crucial moment. Almost immeditaley Madueke has a golden chance down the other end as the ball drops to him in the box but Ortega spreads himself and saves well.
The break in play with Lewis’ injury sees both teams take a drinks break. Guardiola still enthusiastic as ever with his instructions. Ndala and Fatah also come on for City in place of Grealish and Bobb.
Chelsea win a corner and play it short. The move breaks down but Chelsea win the throw-in high up. Gusto plays a low driven ball first time but it’s cleared back to Chelsea who attack once again quickly. Dewsbury-Hall sells Sterling short and Lewis can slide in to clear.
The full-back appears to be struggling after that challenge and he will be replaced by Susoho.
Playing out from the back works this time and Nkunku plays in Marc Guiu who came on in at some point in the chaos of those three goals. The former Barcelona man should double Chelsea’s tally but drags his effort wide.
It was Fernandez who made way for Guiu while Badiashile came on for Tosin.
Man City 4 Chelsea 1: Madueke beats his man down the outside on the right before standing one up to the back post. Sterling takes the cross superbly on the side volley as he side-foots it into the top-left corner. A wonderful goal that is maybe just a consolation. Goals galore!
Man City 4 Chelsea 0: Gusto gives it away once again and before you know it McAtee plays Haaland through on goal. Clinical stuff from the Norwegian who tucks home with his left foot.
Chelsea concede two quickfire goals once again with two strikes in as many minutes. Really sloppy again from Maresca’s men. The nature of the goals conceded tonight is worrying.
Man City 3 Chelsea 0: McAtee drives City forward after Chelsea’s attack breaks down. He finds Bobb who cuts in and takes a sharp shot beating Sanchez at the near post.
Chelsea get us underway kicking from right to left and Madueke is immediatley involved as he picks it up in a dangerous position down Chelsea’s right but his low ball is cleared.
Down the other end Bobb jinks past Colwill down City’s right before making his way down the byline and almost sneaking it past Sanchez.
A bright start form either side’s right-wingers. It was Wilson-Esbrand who made way for Galvez for City.
Noni Madueke and Raheem Sterling are on for Chelsea in place of Mudryk and Caicedo.
Galvez is on for Man City – confirmation of who was withdrawn shortly.
It was all-action in the opening five minutes of that half with Haaland gifted two goals from sloppy Chelsea mistakes.
Maresca will not be phased though and will continue asking his team to play out under pressure.
The Norweigan has bagged his third and fourth goals of pre-season.

The first half draws to a close with Man City leading Chelsea 2-0 thanks to Erling Haaland’s two early goals.
The first was a penalty after three minutes after Colwill brought down the Norwegian forward as Chelsea failed to clear.
The Man City captain for the evening doubled their lead just two minutes later when he was gifted the ball from Caicedo.
Maresca’s side went on to dominate possession and look promising in their build up but failed to convert their best chances that fell to Nkunku and Fernandez.
Wilson-Esbrand pulled up with what looked like a hamstring tweak and he is down receiving treatment. Chelsea play a short corner when play resumes but it comes to nothing.
Fernandez then picks up a yellow for getting in the way of a quick free-kick. It was the Argentinian who drew the yellow the same way moments before.
There will somehow be just 1 minute of added time. The two drinks break was two minutes alone.
Mudryk looks to have taken a slight knock but he is soon back on his feet. Phillips, who has looked dangerous with his long-range passing so far, looks for Grealish over the top but there is too much weight on this one.
McAtee picks up a yellow card for not getting out the way of a quickly-taken free-kick. Oh so close for Chelsea! Nkunku is slipped through on goal but Gusto’s ball has too much on it. Ortega comes out to sweep up but it falls to Fernandez. He goes for the chip over the keeper but it goes inches wide. Should be 2-1.
Gusto then picks up a yellow card – possibly harsh on the Frenchman.
Smart play from Dewsbury-Hall finds Nkunku who wins the foul from Phillips. Mudryk does well to chase a long ball into the channel but a back heel goes wrong.
Tosin dallies on a long ball over the top and is dispossed but McAtee’s early-taken effort is tame and comfortable for Sanchez.
Nkunku receives it on the edge of the box and is given space so let’s fly but it is high and wide. A nice pocket of space occupied by the forward who looks most likely for Chelsea.
Wilson-Esbrand is looking to beat Mudryk down City’s left but the winger sticks to his task and blocks the ball behind for a corner.
A short corner is eventually delivered to Haaland who raises his foot well to prod an effort on goal that looked like it had gone in the back of the net. It had in fact gone just wide and but hit the post behind the goal.
Play resumes and Mudryk charges forward as Chelsea nick it off City in midfield but he runs into trouble. The winger does well a few moments later to win it back. A sloppy ball from Caicedo gifts it back to City however.
Guardiola’s men enjoy perhaps their longest spell of possession so far. Chelsea win it high up the pitch but Fernandez doesn’t release it quickly enough to capitalise.
Colwill leaves a lot one on O’Reilly and is slightly lucky to escape a booking. That foul brings us into a water break with 20 minutes left to go in this half.
Chelsea will be disappointed with those two sloppy goals but there are encouraging patterns of play coming through their central players. Can they convert their early dominance of possession into more chances?
Mudryk cuts in onto his weaker left foot this time but Gvardiol blocks his low effort.
A great chance for Chelsea! Nkunku is slipped threw on goal by Fernandez. The Frenchman looks to slot it between the legs of Ortega from the right of the six-yard box but the keeper saves well. Good effort – good stop.
James appears to be a right-sided centre-back so far with Gusto as a left wing-back. The Chelsea skipper had been operating as an inverted full-back for much of pre-season.
Colwill does well to sweep round and stop Bobb from bearing down on goal. Dewsbury-Hall wins the foul from O’Reilly. Gusto delivers another dangerous ball from the left but Phillips is there to head clear.
Chelsea are having more of the ball in these early stages and Caicedo plays a nice one-two to bring it up the pitch but City nick it back and work it round the back themselves.
Gusto plays a promising ball in from the left but it goes through everyone all the way to Mudryk at the back post where the move breaks down. Grealish is found well on the left before cutting in and striking low but into the arms of Sanchez.
Wilson-Esbrand does well again moments later against the Ukraine international to win the throw-in. Dewbury-Hall gets his firsty meaningful touches down Chelsea’s left but the attack comes to nothing.
Caicedo picks up the first yellow card of the game as Bobb shimmies away from him nicely and draws the foul.
A really sloppy start from Maresca’s side who are persisting with their efforts to playing out from the back. Haaland won’t believe his luck in these opening minutes. Two absolute gifts but that will give him a load of confidence – if he needed any.
Chelsea play out well this time through Lavia and Fernandez draws the foul from Grealish. There is a bit of afters between the pair. Mudryk looks to take on Wilson-Esbrand but the City man wins the goal-kick.
Man City 2 Chelsea 0 Wow… what are Chelsea doing here? It’s Caicedo this time who gifts the ball to that man again with a blind pass. Haaland shifts the ball onto his right foot before slotting the ball past Sanchez into that bottom right corner again. 2-0.
Man City 1 Chelsea 0 Haaland cooly slots home but is forced to retake his effort. He goes the same way and Sanchez guesses right this time but can’t get a strong enough hand to keep it out.
Penalty for Man City! Jack Grealish closed down Tosin and blocked his clearance. The ball fell to Haaland who looked to tuck home but he was clipped by Colwill as he let fly. The referee points to the spot.
City go unusually direct from kick-off that gifts Chelsea early possession. Mudryk appears to have started on Chelsea’s right with Dewsbury-Hall operating slightly tucked in on the left early on.
With four centre-mids on the pitch it’s maybe unsurprising that Chelsea don’t appear to be inverting a fullback.
Man City get us underway kicking from right to left. Both sides in their away kit tonight.
You feel Chelsea’s side is much closer to full-strength than Man City’s with Guardiola’s hand still being somewhat forced to look to youth. Will Chelsea’s experience prove too much for City’s youngsters?
It’s always a spectacle in the US and a man has just parachuted into the stadium with a trail of a flare behind him. You don’t get this in the Premier League! Maybe for the best.
The teams have now emerged from the tunnel and kick-off appears to be a couple minutes away.
We are just moments away from kick-off at the Ohio Stadium although it may be a slight delay on the scheduled 22:30 BST start-time.
Pep Guardiola and Enzo Maresca will be looking for their sides to make an impact tonight ahead of their meeting on the opening day of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.
Despite having a new manager in the dugout, Chelsea will be looking to continue the excellent form from the end of last season that saw them finish sixth after languishing in mid-table for the majority of the season.
As for City, it’s business as usual coming into another Premier League season with the expectations of another Premier League title. They became on the first side to win four in a row last season and although a slow start to the campaign never seems to phase them, a win tonight would provide a boost for their visit to west London in two weeks time.
Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on his former understudy Enzo Maresca.
Ahead of tonight’s clash he said: “I’m really pleased for him,” Guardiola added. “We spent a special year together.
“He is an incredible, lovely person. And his family too.
“He did a really good job – unbelievable – at Leicester: promotion to the Premier League and now he is in one of the top five, six teams in England.
“And I wish him the best because he deserves it. Nice people deserve the best.
“And as a manager he has success because he has the most important thing. To be a manager is believing something deeply but, really, deeply, deeply.
“And whatever the results, I stick with my idea. And that’s why he believes in what he does.
“And he will have success. I don’t know how long, but he will have it.”

Pep Guardiola makes no changes to the side that lost on penalties after a 2-2 with City’s youthful pre-season continuing. Erling Haaland skippers the side .

Good evening and welcome to live coverage of Manchester City v Chelsea from the Ohio stadium as the two Premier League sides continue their pre-season tours of the USA. Chelsea’s new boss Enzo Maresca will be looking to get one over his mentor Pep Guardiola ahead of their meeting on the opening day of the season as both teams look to improve on what has been a disappointing pre-season so far.
While the calibre of opposition faced by the Premier League champions has been tougher, City are yet to register a win in their three fixtures so far in the States. There has been no shortage of entertainment though, with Celtic getting the better of Guardiola’s men in a 4-3 thriller before they were beaten 3-2 by AC Milan. City come into tonight’s clash having lost to Barcelona on penalties after a 2-2 draw unfolded on Tuesday night.
Despite Chelsea managing a 3-0 victory over Club America on Wednesday night, their pre-season has been no more convincing than their English counterparts. Maresca’s side kicked things off with a 2-2 draw against Wrexham of League One before they were thrashed 4-1 by Celtic.
And while the likes of Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish have featured in all of City’s contests so far, it is Maresca who has fielded starting lineups that more closely resemble what is expected when the sides meet at Stamford Bridge on 18 August. Guardiola has given plenty of City’s youth a chance in the US but this won’t be the case when they begin their campaign for a fifth successive league title in west London in two weeks time. Or their Community Shield clash with local rivals Manchester United next Saturday for that matter.
Ahead of this evening’s clash Guardiola has heaped praise on the man in the opposing dugout. Discussing Maresca, he said: “We spent a special year together. He is an incredible, lovely person. He did a really good job – unbelievable – at Leicester. And he will have success (at Chelsea). I don’t know how long, but he will have it.”
